The Quest for space

The drive to extend the home continues at pace. The desire to live life in an up-to-date/modern way requires space to do it in. Modern life now goes hand in hand with technology, open plan living and light and so often, the beautiful old Victorian terraced house, no longer cuts the mustard. What was once the peak of modernity has now become a cage that gets torn apart and re forged to make way for the modern family.

So it is not surprising, even with Brexit looming the race to modernise these wonderful homes continues unhindered. This is down to many factors, but notably; stamp duty - resulting in the unwillingness to move, the fact that borrowing is still affordable and of course - a strong house price. The slogan "Don't move, improve" has never been more prevalent - the extension will wash its face but most importantly it allows for an update to a modern way of living.

We at BTL think this is all very positive. The cost and unwillingness to move is encouraging two things, a personal investment in life quality (domestic improvements) and brilliantly it's bringing a sense of belonging and rejuvenation to communities and high streets that was thought to be long gone. As the turnover of property slows down, the communities in those areas develop and what we are seeing is; owner/occupiers are extending from a short term purchase to a "ten year" plan or a "forever" home, and whether you are choosing a home forever or for '10 years', the niggles with the property are not things that can be smoothed over.

This all means that the temptation to dig a basement, add a loft, a roof terrace or create that enchanting addition is real! And whilst you are bothering to invest in these spaces to create additional space, why not cast a thought to how you want to live in it. Design it to fit with you and your lifestyle - carry out the re-wire and have the lights and plug sockets where you want them to be, or re-plumb and be able to shower more than one person at once - finally have a home that works for the way you live.

This quest for space and change of attitude in what part the home plays in our lives is resulting in exceptional spaces being re hashed and made new across London's residential sector. We have the luxury to work with exceptional architects and interior designers and have an incredible design team here at BTL who are all pushing the boundaries of what a little Victorian home can house.
